A practical method
A decision brief
A concise decision record: options, evidence, open questions and a review date. Work through the prompts in your own notes. No information is submitted or saved here.
Decision and owner
Write the exact choice, alternatives, decision date and person authorized to decide. If ownership is split, note how a tie will be resolved.
Evidence ledger
Make three columns: verified fact with source/date, working assumption, and unknown. Identify who can verify each unknown without exposing sensitive records by default.
Option trade-offs
For each feasible option, name its dependency, likely capacity burden, reversible test and clear stop condition. Leave financial claims blank until the organization supplies reviewed figures.
Engagement boundary
Before hiring anyone, ask for the operator, scope, deliverables, fees, confidentiality, decision rights and conflict disclosures in writing.
Decision record
Record why an option was chosen, who approved it, what would change the decision and the next review date. A brief is useful even when the choice is to wait.
Record the outcome
- What is the proposed next step, and who owns it?
- What evidence supports it, and what remains unknown?
- What would make you pause or change direction?
- When will the decision be reviewed?
Keep private details in your own records. This is a reading guide, not a submission form.
